Glazed panels or complete glazed screens are often required to allow vision and natural light through fire-rated internal walls and doors. Indeed, fire resistant glazing can provide an important safety benefit - other building occupants can be seen on the other side of the door, as can hazards such as smoke in the case of a fire. Approved Document M to the Building Regulations (England & Wales) now also places an increased importance on the role of glazed panels in doors.
Whenever a fire resistant glazed panel is installed it's essential that it's fitted along with a suitable fire resistant glazing retention system, in order to maintain the integrity of the fire rated door or wall. Our fire resistant glazing systems are designed to hold the glass firmly in place during normal use, but in the event of fire the intumescent material expands, securing and insulating the glass and protecting the surrounding timber.
Although there are no specific test procedures to determine the performance of a glazed aperture or multi-paned construction in relation to smoke, our systems are designed to minimize smoke transfer, and fit tightly on the perimeter of the glass to eliminate undesirable rattle at the same time.
Our System-36 glazing system can also be installed in a fire-rated door without compromising acoustic performance (please refer to our Acoustic Sealing Systems for more information and details of sizes).
